The Job Involves…

  • Basic computer knowledge, preferably experience with Avimark
  • Taking clear and complete medical histories
  • Writing legibly and accurately in medical records
  • Preparing and maintaining the exam rooms and treatment areas
  • Cleaning and scrubbing (and knows importance of these duties)
  • Effectively and compassionately restraining dogs and cats for exams, blood draw, other treatments (especially if scared, large, or difficult)
  • Accurately performing physical assessments of pets
  • Collecting blood and urine samples efficiently
  • Knowledge and clear communication of common vaccine protocols, common health problems, diseases, and treatment/medications, and basic pet care including puppy and kitten care
  • Ability to set up and sometimes read cytology, fecal floats/smears, heartworm checks, and skin scrapings
  • Proper positioning for radiographs
  • Intake of drop off patients and discharge of patients based on veterinarian’s orders, explaining necessary follow-up and home care instructions and ensuring the patent is well groomed and in a medically appropriate state
  • Being confident and professional even when stressed
  • Maintaining a positive and cooperative relationship with fellow employees

Prerequisites:

  • At least 3 years of experience as a veterinary assistant or technician
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to lift, carry and restrain animals weighing at least 50 pounds
  • Ability to work on your feet for several hours at a time
